Disney-MGM Studios Information Guide

Free Dining Plan Values

It's been recently announced that the free Disney dining plan is returning to Walt Disney World this fall but the question is where to go at the Studios and get a great value. Since one is not paying for the dining plan in the fall, one may not think it's necessary to wory about getting a good value but the more money you can save on food, the better, right? Besides, this guide will help those who purchase Disney's Dining Plan in addition. As a matter of reference, all the values picked below are from the dinner menus as in general, you will get more bang for your buck at dinner at a sit down restaurant than at lunch.

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant
The Sci-Fi isn't exactly known for it's values, mostly because much of the food is overpriced, but if you decide to go here, you will find the food value to be higher since the food is free during the free dining promotion.

Appetizer: 7 bean chili

Entree: Butcher Steak

Dessert: Cheesecake

The chili is a great appetizer and if you have any affinity for chili, you will really enjoy it. Steaks are generally the best food value on the dining plan as they're the most expensive but also because steaks tend to be pretty good tasting.

50's Primetime Cafe
Best Value
Primetime is a great restaurant for the dining plan, especially when it's free, and you have some great choices here.

Appetizer: Beer battered onion rings

Entree: Old fashioned pot roast

Dessert: S'mores

Let's go in reverse. The s'mores are amazing and perhaps the best dessert at the Studios (or at Walt Disney World). There's no question that you should try the s'mores. The entree was a tough pick because the meatloaf is a favorite of Primetime but because of the price, I went for the pot roast which is pretty good. The appetizers aren't anything to write home about but it's pretty hard to screw up onion rings.

Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano
Mama Melrose is a good option if other restaurants at the Studios are booked up and the food here is great.

Appetizer: Artisan breads and spreads

Entree: Penne alla vodka

Dessert: Warm chocolate truffle cake

The breads and spreads is a great appetizer to share among the people in your group and the penne alla vodka was chosen for it's good taste and value on the dining plan. The flatbread pizzas are good, but to get the most out of the dining plan, you're better off with one of the other entrees.

Hollywood & Vine
Hollywood & Vine is generally not a good value on the dining plan because it's a buffet and it's one fo the most affordable buffets on Disney World property. It would be smarter to pay cash here and not using a table service credit at Hollywood & Vine since you won't come close to getting as much value here as any of the other sit down restaurants. That being said, if you do go here anyway, try whatever is at the meat carving station as your entree.

Hollywood Brown Derby
Like Hollywood & Vine, this is another bad value on the dining plan because the Brown Derby is a "Signature Restaurant" which is Disney code for it requires two table service credits per person to eat here and I can't justify that cost for what you can get here. Again, if you want to eat here, you should pay for it out of pocket and use your table service credit elsewhere.

Appetizer: Cobb salad

Entree: Grilled Filet mignon

Desert: Flourless chocolate cake

The signature dish at the Brown Derby is technically an appetizer. The Cobb salad is big enough for two and can be used as a salad to share amongst everyone at the table and tastes terrific. Of all the entrees, the filet mignon is going to be the best value if you insist on eating here on the dining plan. The flourless cake can be found at a few other restaurants around Walt Disney World but it's a real fan favorite.
