The Wave

Sunday, February 13, 2011

One of the greatest presentations ever to become across Walt Disney World is Fantasmic!. What an amazing spectacle of lights, color, character and magic! The way the water shoots up making spray screens, and the way the music matches every movement of the show…it is all so magical and capture every magical element that Disney offers.

But before Fantasmic! begins, there is the magic of something else. Its the magic of 10-thousand Disney fans all gathered together, talking with each other, mingling with other guests, laughing and sharing memories that create a lifetime.

I want to tell you about an experience I had in June 2010 prior to a viewing of Fantasmic!.

Jess and I were settled and pretty-well front-and-centre for Fantasmic! that evening. The crowd was pouring in to the Hollywood Hills Amphitheatre getting ready to go in to Mickey's imagination when all of a sudden…the wave started. Oh yes…that wave that goes for 10+ minutes before Fantasmic from one end of the theatre to the other back and forth. Its a fun time…but something this time made it extra funny.

Some college kids in the middle of the theatre yelled out, "SLOW MOTION!" Don't ask me how everyone heard it. But they did. Next thing I know is the wave is coming at us in a REALLY slow speed. It was the funniest thing to see people do it so slow all the way there and back, followed by cheers.

Then the kids spoke up again: "FAST MOTION!" Next thing you know, the audience was doing a full-speed wave across the entire theatre, followed by high-fives all around and cheers.

And this, folks, captures the magic of Disney perfectly. This is the kind of magic that Disney can't create for us. This is the magic of everyone coming together and spending time on their day off, or on their Walt Disney World vacation. 10-thousand of your closest friends all waiting for the magic - while at the same time creating some magic.

This, folks, is what Walt Disney World is all about.
